Marketing Product Safety
In the last year, furniture safety issues have been covered in USA Today, the Washington Post, Fast Company and Forbes, along with segments on every major TV network. Netflix even devoted a one-hour documentary to the topic. Yet most furniture companies still fail to recognize safety as a marketable product attribute. Our October 7 webinar will begin with an update on the Consumer Product Safety Commission’s “AnchorIt!” campaign from Brian Walch, public affairs specialist at the CPSC. Brian’s update will include a report on the agency’s recently completed survey that measured consumer awareness of furniture tip-over hazards.
The second half of the October 7 webinar will spotlight the progress of AHFA’s 20+20 Project. Vice President of Communications Pat Bowling will feature website updates from member companies that have made product safety information a standard part of the product description for clothing storage furniture. And she’ll highlight companies that have taken it a step further, making safety a key feature in their overall product quality story.

The Impact of Politics on Consumer Safety
Chris Andresen, Dutko
The November 2020 election will have a significant impact on product safety. Both the Consumer Product Safety Commission and the Environmental Protection Agency have several product safety initiatives in process – from fine-tuning requirements of the formaldehyde emission standard, to STURDY – legislation that proposes a mandatory product stability standard – to SOFFA, the upholstered furniture flammability legislation backed by AHFA. How will the election’s outcome set the course for these important issues? Chris Andresen, senior vice president at Dutko GR, has the political insights to answer that question. Chris works with AHFA throughout the year to identify policy opportunities and to create detailed legislative strategies for the Alliance.
