MicroD has named Ken Curtis vice president of sales and marketing. Previously, Curtis served as senior vice president of business development for Alexander Proudfoot Plc, a British business consultancy. Most recently, he was a partner at Greenville, S.C.-based Advanced Automation Inc. prior to the company’s sale to the Doerfer Engineering Group. Globe Express Services has opened a new office in Ningbo, China, a coastal city of 5.17 million that has grown in recent years to become a major trade and shipping hub for its industrialized neighbors throughout Zhejiang province. Bei Lun Port in Ningbo is the fourth largest international deep-water port in China. Globe’s new operations center is equipped to service the region’s major manufacturing industries, including textiles, electronics, furniture, hardware and tools. Ningo increases Globe’s corporate facilities in China to seven, including offices in Hong Kong, Shenzhen, Shanghai, Xiamen, Tianjin and Qingdao. Warren of Rocky Mount, N.C., has been reappointed chair of the local rules committee by the United States Bankruptcy Court, Eastern District of North Carolina Courts. The rules committee is responsible for recommending to the court the rules of practice and procedure governing bankruptcy cases and proceedings pending in the Eastern district. Warren, who practices in the areas of bankruptcy and creditor’s rights and commercial law, has served on the committee since 1996 and served as chair in 2001. He also has served as a member of the Panel of Chapter 7 Bankruptcy Trustees for Eastern North Carolina since 1989. Gerber Technology announces the appointment of Holly Beum as director of software product management. She will oversee product management for all of Gerber Technology’s software products, including its WebPDM and AccuMark solutions. Beum has more than 20 years experience in the design, application and marketing of automation systems. She was the founder of Interface Technologies and has been an independent consultant since 1996. Her customers included General Electric, Omron, International Trust Services and Yale University. Cargo Transporters, headquartered in Claremont, N.C., was presented a Platinum Safety Award by Great West Casualty Company as part of the 2004 National Fleet Safety Awards Program. Cargo Transporters is a truckload carrier operating over 400 trucks in the United States and Canada. “We are proud of our professional drivers who worked so hard to achieve this award for the sixth year in a row,” said John Pope, CEO. Cargo trucks traveled over 60 million miles last year. The Aktrin Furniture Information Center is celebrating its 20th Anniversary in 2005. The center traces its roots to the Aktrin Research Institute, founded in 1985 in Oakville, Canada, by Stefan Wille. An economist and former country and industry analyst with a large commercial bank, Wille launched his business writing business reports covering the printing, pulp, paper and publishing industries. He began covering the furniture industry in 1987 and in 1993 established a U.S. subsidiary in High Point, N.C. The company has published over 100 furniture reports and established on online network of marketing and industry reports about furniture. Columbia Forest Products announced in May it would convert all its veneer-core hardwood plywood plants to formaldehyde-free manufacturing processes using a patented, soy-based adhesive cooperatively developed by Columbia, the College of Forestry at Oregon State University and Hercules Incorporated. Hercules has awarded Columbia a license to use its patented adhesive system on an exclusive basis for all of Columbia’s North American decorative panel markets. The new adhesive, made primarily of soy flour, will allow Columbia to completely eliminate urea formaldehyde from its veneer-core and Woodstalk agrifiber-core panel products. Urea formaldehyde is used in the majority of North American and imported hardwood plywood panels and has recently been classified by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (part of the World Health Organization) as a carcinogen to humans. Based in Portland, Ore., Columbia Forest Products manufactures hardwood plywood and hardwood veneer. The company also markets and produces engineered and solid wood flooring products. Columbia’s decorative interior veneers and panels are used in high-end cabinetry, fine furniture, architectural millwork and commercial fixtures. www.columbiaforestproducts.com
