Hickory Springs
is the first U.S. foam producer to bring CertiPUR-USCM compliant foam to the domestic market.
CertiPUR originated in Europe in 2004. With very few alterations other than translation, the American version, CertiPUR-US, is open to all manufacturers of flexible polyurethane foam selling product in the US. The CertiPUR-US certification process involves intense foam assessment, including VOC testing and chemical breakdown analysis. It also involves signed affirmation that CertiPUR-US-prohibited ingredients, such as ozone-depleting CFCs, PBDE fire retardants, lead, mercury and other materials of concern, are not being used in the foaming process.
“The CertiPUR-US label is something Hickory Springs is proud of,” says Executive Vice President of Marketing Dwayne Welch. “We see the program as added value, offering our customers – and theirs – peace of mind. In addition, it complements our on-going company-wide environmental responsibility and sustainability efforts.”
Hickory Springs is one of several founding members of the CertiPUR-US program, which was officially introduced by the Polyurethane Foam Association earlier this year and is now operated by the Alliance of Flexible Polyurethane Foam Inc. (AFPF). Hickory Springs Vice President Bobby Bush currently is serving as chairman of AFPF.
“We see this as the foam industry’s best route for the future,” says Bush. With guidance from a diverse AFPF Advisory Panel, CertiPUR-US will remain vital, “adjusting to new concerns and incorporating developing science in every aspect of foam and the foaming process.”

Effective January 26, 2009, importers are now required to submit additional data to U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) before imported goods are permitted entry into the United States. The Import Security Filing (ISF) requirement, also known as “10+2,” requires that specific data elements be electronically submitted to Customs 24 hours prior to goods lading on board vessels at origin. Failure to file could result in penalties of up to $5,000 per transaction.
Importers may either submit the ISF data to Customs themselves or rely on a designated agent’s service. Bill Smith, director of marketing & supply chain services for Globe Express Services elaborates, “The forwarder/consolidator is best positioned to provide importers’ ISF data to Customs since they’re closest to overseas vendors and factories. Globe Express Services (GES) recognized this opportunity early and developed a robust filing service, complete with specialized software and electronic linkages to U.S. Customs.”
As a global third-party logistics (3PL) provider and Customhouse broker with extensive furniture industry experience, GES is prepared to serve as an importer’s ISF Filer. Furniture importers who have not yet selected their ISF Filer are encouraged to contact John Dellinger, GES Corporate Broker, at 800-874-8827 or john.dellinger@globeexpress.com.

Sun Delivery Inc., a nationwide, white glove, in-home furniture delivery specialist, is opening its newest service and distribution center in Dallas, Texas, effective February 15, 2009. This new facility will service Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas, Oklahoma and New Mexico. The Dallas facility initially will be managed by Tony Ficken, Western Region Director.
This is the third facility for Sun Delivery. Other locations are in Thomasville, N.C., and Los Angeles, Calif. The Thomasville-based company was founded in 1995 and has become one of the nation’s premier white glove carriers offering service to every zip code in the 48 contiguous United States.
According to Sun Delivery President Rick Phillips, “Our new Dallas facility will allow us to offer even quicker transit times to the central region of the country and will allow us to extend our pick-up zone to a host of new furniture manufacturers and distributors.”
Aimee Boozer, vice president, reports that the company experienced double digit growth in 2008. “We are very excited about this new Dallas facility and the added value it will bring to our customers,” she says.
Sun Delivery is an asset-based carrier and does not use the “agency concept.” “Controlling the entire blanket wrap process from beginning to end allows us to maintain a claims ratio of less than 1 percent,” says Phillips. “With customer service representatives on duty seven days per week, including evenings and weekends, we score high marks on our customer satisfaction surveys.” www.sundeliveryinc.com

Carpenter Company, the largest manufacturer of comfort cushioning in the world, has formally introduced the Renew brand of foam cushioning made with Cargill’s soy-based BiOH® polyols. Renw products are fully recyclable and available in a wide assortment of firmnesses and densities, including the first bio-based high resiliency foam.
“We are already selling Renew foam to major names in the furniture industry such as La-Z-Boy, and we are beginning to work with bedding manufacturers, as well,” says President Stan Yukevich. “We chose Cargill’s BiOH polyols for their unique and proprietary soybean oil technology, which allows us to produce consistent quality without sacrificing consumer comfort and without the need for our customers to reengineer their processes.”
Derived from natural vegetable oils such as soybean oil, BiOH polyols help flexible polyurethane foam manufacturers reduce their environmental footprint and market their choice to downstream customers. In 2007, Cargill announced the opening of a $5.5 million polyols research and development facility.
More recently, the company scaled up its manufacturing capabilities with construction of a $22 million BiOH polyol plant in Chicago to meet growing demand. Though not expected to be fully operational until November, initial production batches were made beginning in early September.
Cargill is an international provider of food, agricultural and risk management products and services with 160,000 employees in 67 countries. Cargill’s BiOH polyols business unit is co-sponsor of AHFA’s annual Sage Awards, a program recognizing environmental excellence in the home furnishings and bedding industries. www.cargill.com

Direction Furniture, a Newton, N.C.-based frame producer, reports significant cost savings and an increase in production output following the implementation of Plataine’s NESTERwood software. According to J. B. Costner, manager of Direction Furniture, the company has seen a consistent reduction in material consumption, increase in production output and a steady rise in cost savings since installing NESTERwood in May 2008.
"The tool paths and layouts generated by NESTERwood are much more efficient than we could ever have hoped to do on our own,” says Costner. “Difficult tasks such as making re-cut drawings can now be accomplished in a fraction of the time required beforehand. The process of scheduling has also become easier and faster, expediting order processing and production.” NESTERwood enables upholstery manufacturers to respond to market dynamics and remain viable in an increasingly competitive global environment by meeting customer demands for made-to-order products at competitive prices and with shorter delivery times. NESTERwood’s Rolling Nest automatically optimizes the placement of pieces from one or more orders on multiple sheets of plywood, resulting in material yields that are consistently higher than any other solution. By generating efficient tool paths, NESTERwood improves the productivity of CNC routers. More information about NESTERwood Optimizer can be found at www.plataine.com/nesterwood. Plataine is a provider of production optimization solutions for manufacturers of metal, wood, textile and composite-material products. Plataine’s solutions are used by hundreds of manufacturers worldwide, including Bassett Furniture, Boeing, Century Furniture, Drexel Heritage, Ethan Allen, Ford, General Motors, The Gap, Hagger, Nike, and Wrangler.
