Cargo Transporters held its annual truck driver safety awards program in January, during which 377 drivers received safety award bonuses totaling over $507,000. Qualifying safe drivers were entered into a drawing for three $5,000 cash prizes. In total, the fleet traveled over 50 million miles in 2003. “We continue to invest in new safety technologies to assist our drivers in being the safest on the highway,” stated John Pope, Cargo Transporters president. Borden Chemical, a global producer of chemicals, adhesives and resins for the industrial and wood markets, has acquired the business and technology assets of Southeastern Adhesives Company, a Lenoir, N.C.-based producer of specialty adhesives. The sale includes all technology, product lines and other business assets but does not include Southeastern Adhesives’ plant assets in Lenoir. Borden Chemical will produce and market the acquired product lines, which are used primarily in furniture and millwork applications, through the company’s existing manufacturing and sales network. Based in Columbus, Ohio, Borden Chemical Inc. also previously acquired Southeastern Adhesives’ filtration media resins business. www.bordenchem.com

Exel, a supply chain management company, has been awarded a three-year, $4 million logistics contract with Sears Logistics Services Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Sears, Roebuck and Co. Exel will provide on-time distribution of repair items to a network of nine Sears locations across the country. Exel will pick up repairable items from product service, retail, dealer and hardware stores and deliver them to central repair centers and return the repaired products to their original stores. www.exel.com

Drexel Heritage has integrated MicroD’s EasyOrder software into its manufacturing ordering process. In addition to enhancing order-configuration and verification, the new software is integrated into Drexel’s J.D. Edwards manufacturing system for upholstered goods and its proprietary manufacturing system for case goods. Drexel is also using MicroD’s newly released MPCat software for creating and maintaining product catalogs that conform to furniture industry catalogs developed by the Furniture Industry Data Exchange Committee (FIDX). www.microdinc.com.

Consumers searching on Nebraska Furniture Mart’s site are able to see products in 10 major categories of furniture. As participating manufacturers update their catalogs, the data is immediately available to consumers visiting the store site. In addition to its flagship store in Omaha, Nebraska Furniture Mart recently opened a store in Kansas City, Mo. FurnitureFan.com is an Internet furniture directory for consumers featuring manufacturers and retailers throughout the United States and Canada.
