(04/06/2004) AFMA Urges Senate to Act on 'Competition in Contracting' Proposal By: Chris Pearce
April 2004 – To help create new business opportunities for domestic furniture manufacturers, AFMA’s Washington Office recently submitted written comments to the Senate Governmental Affairs Committee in support of legislation to allow private sector companies to compete fairly with Federal Prison Industries (FPI) for contracts with the U.S. government. The comments were prepared as part of a hearing held by the Subcommittee on Financial Management, the Budget, and International Security to examine the impact of FPI’s unique mandatory source status on competition in the government procurement process, particularly on small and medium-sized businesses seeking to do business with the federal government. The House overwhelmingly approved an AFMA-backed FPI reform proposal last November. Efforts are now focused on advancing similar legislation in the Senate this session.
